As the NFL playoffs begin, 49 potential Super Bowl matchups could emerge from the 14 remaining teams. While any team that reaches New Orleans will undoubtedly be deserving, some matchups are undeniably more exciting than others. Here are the top five matchups I’d love to see in Super Bowl 59 this February.
Eagles-Ravens
We saw this matchup earlier in the season, and while the final score was close at 24-19, those who watched will remember it more as a dominant Eagles win. If we were to get a rematch, I think it would be a much tighter game. Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts have been two of the best quarterbacks in football over the past few years, but there have always been questions about whether their styles of play can lead to a championship. In this scenario, one of them would finally leave with a ring. Not to mention, we could witness two of the best running backs in football—Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry—who both joined their respective teams last offseason. In their first year on new teams, they could potentially be the key difference-makers that lift their teams to the top of the mountain.
Eagles-Bills
The Eagles might have the best roster in football, boasting All-Pro caliber players at nearly every position, while the Bills could be considered the ultimate one-man show, guided by likely MVP winner Josh Allen. Another compelling storyline in this game would be the coaching matchup. Both Nick Sirianni and Sean McDermott entered the season on the hot seat, with many questioning whether they could lead a team to a championship. By the end of this game, one of these men would silence their critics for a very, very long time.
Buccaneers-Chiefs
This is probably the least likely matchup on this list, but that doesn’t take away from how much I want to see it. Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes always seem to deliver epic duels, dating back to their college days, including a memorable Monday Night Football overtime game this season. In this scenario, Baker Mayfield could make a compelling case to be considered the best quarterback in the NFC if he were to guide the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl, while Patrick Mahomes would have the opportunity to avenge his only Super Bowl loss against the same franchise.
Lions-Chiefs
This matchup has felt inevitable all season. The Lions and Chiefs have been the two most consistent teams in football, each entering the playoffs with a 15-2 record and the top seed in their respective conferences. Either outcome would be historic. A Chiefs win would make them the first team in NFL history to three-peat, solidifying their place as one of the greatest dynasties ever. On the other hand, a Lions victory would bring a smile to almost every non-Chiefs fan, as Dan Campbell’s team would complete one of the most remarkable four-year turnarounds in sports history and deliver the first Super Bowl championship to the Motor City.
Lions-Bills
Could you imagine the two-week tailgate parties in these two neighboring regions leading up to this game? The Bills and Lions, separated by just a few hours on the map, have been two of the most tortured franchises in NFL history. Despite all the heartbreak and countless losing seasons, their fans have never wavered and arguably represent the two best fanbases in the league. After years of frustration, tears, and anguish, one of these teams would finally reach the pinnacle as Super Bowl champions, while the other would face yet another devastating heartbreak. We deserve this game.
