Talk about a culture changing overnight! The Los Angeles Chargers, led by new coach Jim Harbaugh, were expected to be better heading into the 2024 season, but I doubt anyone anticipated the team being this good.
At 7-3, not only is this team a near lock for the postseason barring a collapse, but I think they're a legitimate threat in the AFC.
Quarterback Justin Herbert is playing the best football of his career, and although they may not have the most explosive weapons on offense, as a whole, this is a balanced roster with players who work their tails off.
Since being hired in January, Harbaugh has brought an undeniable spark to this franchise, and I am really bullish on this team going forward.
For years, the Chargers have struggled to remain disciplined and be seen as a "tough" football team. However, Harbaugh's no-nonsense attitude has transformed this team. The days of costly mistakes and missed opportunities are mostly gone.
Sure, on Sunday night against Cincy, they did allow Joe Burrow and the Bengals to get back into that game despite being up 24-6, but under previous regimes, I can confidently say that was a game the Chargers would lose in years past. This team now performs well under pressure.
Not to mention, this defense has performed brilliantly all season long, allowing just 14.5 points per game. The pass rush, led by Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, has caused havoc for opposing quarterbacks. Derwin James, meanwhile, is still one of the league's best defensive backs, and he helps set the tone for his team that is playing with passion we have never seen out of this roster.
The Chargers are now a team that Harbaugh has shaped to play almost any style of football. The offensive line has been solid, and they can either grind it out with the run game or let it loose with Herbert's arm.
The future in Los Angeles is more promising than ever because of the leadership of Harbaugh and Herbert and a squad full of talented, hardworking players.
Not only do I think this team is a serious contender this season, but I think the future looks even brighter.
