Who would have thought it would come down to this? ten days ago, the Florida Panthers were on the cusp of etching their names onto the Stanley Cup after taking a 3-0 series lead over the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final. Now, the Panthers are on the verge of being on the wrong side of possibly not only the greatest comeback in the history of the NHL but perhaps in the history of professional sports.
The Oilers in Games 4-6 have outscored Florida 18-5 and after seeming all but dead, Edmonton's three consecutive dominant victories have perhaps set up the biggest game in NHL history in a winner-take-all all Game 7 on Monday Night.
No matter how Game 7 goes, we will be witnesses to history. Either the Panthers win, and become the third team in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup after losing in the Cup Final the year prior, or we get the chaotic scenario. If the Oilers pull this off, they will have completed the most improbable run to the championship I can recall in any sport
From 30th in the standings and firing their coach in November, it is already crazy that they have made it this far. If they complete what seemed to be the impossible task of coming back from down 0-3 which has not happened in the Final since 1942, an Oilers win would bring the Cup back to Canada for the first since 1993, be the franchise's first championship since 1990, and lastly, it would be time to start having GOAT discussions about Connor McDavid if he can will this team back from the dead yet again.
Either way, Monday night will be a historic evening for the NHL.
