Rex Ryan Back to The Jets Makes Some Sense

On his podcast "3 and Out," former NFL scout (and one of my favorite podcasters) John Middlekauf has mentioned on several occasions that he wouldn't be shocked if former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan made a return to the sidelines in 2025 for Gang Green. Although it sounds far-fetched at first, the more you deep-dive into the possibility, the more it makes sense.

At the moment, the New York Jets are a complete mess. They have fired their general manager and head coach this season, and it appears more likely than not that they will be moving on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the offseason. The Jets need a complete culture change yet again following a disappointing 2024 season that started with extremely high expectations in New York. That’s where Rex Ryan could come in.

For years now, Ryan has made it clear that he wants to coach again, and given the Jets' current situation, it's difficult to see anyone with options agreeing to work for owner Woody Johnson.

Ryan's time with the Jets (2009-2014) was defined by a tough, direct approach that was well-received by both the team and the fanbase. Under his leadership, the Jets somehow took down both prime versions of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in postseason games and even advanced to the AFC Championship in 2009 and 2010, largely thanks to Ryan's elite defense.

The Jets need that kind of identity right now. The defense is loaded with talent, and players like Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams would thrive under Ryan's aggressive, blitz-heavy style. Furthermore, he has the personality to revitalize a Jets fan base that has been traumatized over the years.

Would this be a long-term marriage? No, probably not, but Ryan could serve as perhaps a version of a "bridge coach" as the Jets just need to get back on the right track. Ryan rejoining the Jets in New York would be an attempt to reclaim that lost identity and infuse the building with something it seems to be lacking... positive vibes and no-nonsense locker room. Not to mention, it would give the fanbase someone to get behind—someone who they know cares as much as Jets fans do.

Of course, it is unlikely to happen, as it is quite a bold idea, but it makes a lot of sense when you give it thoughtful consideration.

Who knows, maybe we will see Rex Ryan back on the Jets sideline in 2025.
