My all-time favorite movie is Matt Reeves' The Batman. One reason I love it is that it doesn’t feel like a typical superhero movie. Of course, it’s a Batman film, but if you take away the cape and cowl, it’s a detective thriller at its core.
Near the end of the film, after Gotham is almost flooded by the Riddler, Bruce Wayne delivers one of the most impactful lines I have heard in a film: “People need hope. To know someone’s out there for them". This to me symbolizes Bruce Wayne taking on an increased responsibility as Gotham's protector. At the start of the movie, he uses Batman as a way to strike fear into people, but based on the events of the film, he realizes he needs to use this persona for good. He now understands that the people of Gotham's need more than just justice—they need someone to believe in, someone who will inspire them to keep going even in the face of adversity.
Today, these words seem particularly relevant. Nowadays, it's easy to feel alone, stressed out, or hopeless. In fact, I've dealt with it first hand. There will always be a lot of unknowns, so it's normal for people to wonder if things will ever get better. But trust me, it does.
Hope is more important than ever in times like these. This quote to me is beautiful because it's easy to understand: people need hope, and sometimes that hope comes from knowing that someone cares.
I often find myself coming back to these words a lot. It acts as a reminder of how important hope is. Knowing that there is someone out there for us can make all the difference in a world that can feel so hopeless at times. And maybe we can all be that person for someone in our lives.
