I miss funny movies.
After scrolling through Netflix for 20 minutes it got me thinking about how sad I am going to be for the rest of my life because we are likely never going to get another generational run of comedies like we were able to get in the early 2000s.
Then I found myself asking, what were the best comedies of that era? With so many options in mind, it was tough to nail down a top five, and while it could be on at any time, this is my current top 5 favourite comedies from 2000-2010.
5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
I don't have much to say besides that I do not see this movie mentioned enough as one of the great 2000s comedies. Jason Segel was not yet a true leading man in Hollywood which helps make his character Peter him a more relatable film as we watch try to get over his ex-girlfriend Sarah Marshall.
The supporting cast was not yet at the peak of their powers in the industry and all of the cast from Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Russell Brand, and the brief appearances we get from Jonah Hill & Bill Hader provide us with great one-liners and chemistry that seems very natural.
4. The Other Guys (2010)
Originally, I was only going to allow movies from 2000-2009 on this list but I had to cheat slightly because "The Other Guys" is one of the great comedies of its time.
You knew we were in for something special from the opening ten minutes when we saw Dwyane Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson aim for the bushes but fail miserably. Luckily for us, it leads us to getting Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell in their buddy cop roles, thrive together on-screen as they provide the audience with laughs like not many movies over the last decade.
Other standouts include Eva Mendes who plays Ferrell's "out of his league" housewife, Michael Keaton, the police captain in this version of the NYPD, and lastly, Yankees great, Derek Jeter (if you know, you know).
3. Step Brothers (2008)
Ferrell in his comedic prime, Step Brothers will forever be iconic, no questions asked. The film has quotes you can remember like the back of your hand, as well as executes flawlessly on its simple yet outlandish premise about two men who are scared to enter the "real world" due to how much they have been comforted at home by their parents throughout their lives. Bravo to everyone involved for not making a sequel, it is perfect as is.
2. The Hangover (2009)
Every Wolfpack has either tried to plan or has gone on a trip to Vegas largely due to the impact of this movie. Not only on the great comedies but one of the great movies of the last 15 years.
Superbad (2007)
The ultimate turn-your-brain-off-off movie, and I love it.
Superbad is one of the few movies I can practically read line for line with it in my opinion, being the most quotable movie of my lifetime. The McLovin scene the first I saw nearly had me peeing my pants as I could not take my eyes of that stupid ass ID Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) decided was going to good enough to make people believe he was legal.
Jonah Hill is always great in these types of roles, Michael Cera plays the loveable loser like nobody else could, and our police officers in Seth Rogen paired with Bill Hader are the type of cops you can only wish would be the ones who showed up if you were ever potentially in trouble with the law.
However, what makes this movie so great is despite how much it makes you laugh, Superbad is also just a great a story about the anxieties we have or will deal with when you grow up and everything around is about change, in this film's case, two childhood best friends who will be separated for the first times in their lives and how scared they are to not be around each other all the time.
Truly a masterpiece.
