In the 2023-24 season, the Vancouver Canucks had a resurgence that resulted in the team's first playoff appearance since 2020, which ended in a heartbreaking game seven loss to the Edmonton Oilers in round two playoffs. Although he had a great regular season where he put 89 points in 80 games, much of the Canucks playoff exit was put on the shoulders of forward Elias Petterson. Number 40 struggled in the playoffs, only putting 1 goal and 5 assists in 13 games.
Pettersson’s disappointing playoff performance left Canuck fans asking what happened to the highest paid on the team as to be blunt, he didn't deliver when it mattered most. However, what is great about the NHL at this stage of his career, there is always next year. This upcoming season, I expect a major bounce-back from the Canucks' superstar, I believe Pettersson will make up for his underwhelming post-season by reaching the 100-point mark for the second time in his career.
For the Canuck fans who defended Pettersson's troublesome postseason, their main defence of the forward was that he did not have the wingers skilled enough to play with him. Well, this summer, the Canucks brought in former Boston Bruins winger Jake Debrusk on a seven-year, 38.5 million dollar contract and is currently expected to be on a line with Petterson.
Throughout the majority of his career, Debrusk has been a reliable twenty-goal scorer for the most part. Debrusk coming in will bring a new level of speed, and scoring touch that will help Pettersson help find ways to be productive for the Canucks.
To be fair, much of Pettersson's playoff woes had to do with an injury that went as far back as January and he had been playing through it up until the season ended. I do find it quite ironic how we didn't hear anything about this injury until after he was struggling, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt. I assume this offseason, he has been able to rehab that injury, which should allow him to come into the season 100%.
Lastly, why I am so confident in Pettersson having his best season to date is because we have little to nothing about or from him since the team's exit interviews in May.
I would guess it means that he's heard the noise, which has led to him being motivated as he has never been before coming into a season. Some would say he may be "locked in". To me, the silence from him and his camp is loud, and it makes me believe that he has reached the point all superstars come to at some point in their careers, it is time to put up or shut up.
I am not sure if the Canucks will enjoy the regular season success they had a year ago, but if they do, it may just be because Elias Pettersson had the best season of his career.
