Fans, fanatics, at the end of the day, that's what all us sports fans are. We grow up falling in love with the game, that passion that helps us identify with players and teams. Some fans even plan their schedules around their favourite team to make sure they do not miss any games.
As we begin to burn a passion and bond with our favourite teams and fanbase, we can quickly begin to develop a hatred for other organizations and fanbases.
I know for a fact, that I hate several franchises in all the respective leagues I follow. Let's dive into the franchises you will never catch me cheering for.
Los Angeles Rams:
The Rams have a ton of likeable players on their roster. Matt Stafford is tough as nails, Cooper Kupp, when healthy is as elite as they come, and Puka Nacua seems like one of the more humble rookies in recent NFL history. You're probably asking why are the Rams on this list. Well, that is where head coach Sean McVay comes into play.
I respected McVay a ton when he came into the league and turned around the Rams overnight as a 30-year-old first-time coach. What grinded my gears with McVay was when during the 2022 season when the Rams underperformed after their Super Bowl title in 2021 going 5-12, McVay flittered with leaving the team to go into the Amazon booth for Thursday Night Football. I also do not appreciate their "F them picks" attitude while continuously trying to restructure contracts. The bill will come due for this franchise sooner rather than later.
Boston Bruins:
Shocker, a Montreal Canadiens fan dislikes the Boston Bruins (I bet you can guess the next NHL team on this list). My reason for hating the Bruins is for one, I was born into. The Habs and Bruins have one of the most storied rivalries not only in the NHL, but in all of sports.
However, my true hatred for this franchise began in 2011. The specific incident was when Bruins Captain Zdeno Chara nearly decapitated one of the Habs most reliable goal scorers, Max Pacioretty.
There was a case Chara should have been banned for the remainder of the campaign because of the incident but of course, the NHL did absolutely nothing.
Later that spring, the Bruins went on to beat Montreal in the first round in game 7 overtime which was the first series they won that postseason where they eventually captured the Stanley Cup.
I imagine if Boston did not have their captain for that series, or at the very least if Montreal had Pacioretty in the lineup, the result of that series and NHL history would have been different. Perhaps one of my lifelong dreams of a Montreal-Vancouver Stanley Cup Final matchup would have taken place in June of 2011.
God, I hate this team.
San Francisco 49ers:
I genuinely believe I was happier than some Kansas City Chiefs when we as a community got to see the 49ers choke away another Super Bowl this past February.
For a franchise that prides itself on hoisting Lombardi trophies, they sure do love to lose the big game as they have lost three Super Bowl Matchups since 2013.
The Niners have a ton of frontrunners on their squad who never seem to shut up when they win, but when they are on the losing side of a big game, they find every excuse in the book to explain their loss. Not to mention they also play in a physical fashion that can only be seen as out of bounds (cough, cough, Trent Williams).
I look forward to watching the 49ers next post-season loss in 2025!
Toronto Maple Leafs:
The Habs other rival! Although, unlike the Bruins, there are players on the Maple Leafs who I consider some of my favourite players in the league, specifically, Auston Matthews and William Nylander.
I cannot stand the coverage this team gets, it is nauseating. I would not be shocked if, in a couple of weeks, the NBA Finals end and TSN decides to begin SportsCenter with what Auston Matthews ate for breakfast that morning just to inform us that he does still in fact play for the Maple Leafs.
To add to my disdain for the Leafs, why every year do we follow the same cycle with this team? October through April they have a solid regular season, then once we get into the playoffs they disappoint where they have likely lost in round one. Management will then talk about how changes must happen and everyone on the roster will be evaluated... Only for them to "Run it Back".
Leaf fans, just remember the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.
Maybe your team finally will act and make some changes to the roster this summer, however, I can assure you one thing that will not change. I will never cheer for your team.
