I will acknowledge that throughout my lifetime, I have never been one who has been known for his fashion sense. Have I improved in that area since I started working at Lululemon? I believe so, but I do think that I have some untapped potential in that area of my life.
Even though I may not have the best sense of fashion when it comes to streetwear, I have always had a keen eye for when it comes to uniform designs and the aesthetics of sports. With that in mind, here are some teams in professional sports, in my opinion, who have a pressing need for a uniform switch as soon as possible.
Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL)
If you think that the Jacksonville Jaguars have the most boring jerseys in all of sports, I probably would not disagree with you.
This is so unfortunate because of the gold & teal that is a part of their colour scheme, the Jags have so much potential to have some of the most unique uniforms in sports, much like they did throughout the "Sacksonville" era of Jags football.
The team is expected to be bringing back throwback uniforms in 2024 which is great news to hear. Jags fans have wanted the team to bring back those uniforms on a full-time basis, although they are a drastic improvement on what the team wears now, I wouldn't go that far. I would love it if the Jaguars took the liberty of perhaps finding a way to incorporate some of their past uniforms into one set of uniforms in the future.
Seattle Seahawks (NFL)
When the Seahawks unveiled their current uniform combo in 2012, it was considered a "futuristic" look for the NFL. Twelve years later, I find it funny now that some NFL fans view it as outdated.
As a Seahawks fan, I do agree with a majority of the fanbase that it is probably time to retire that era of Seahawks football, especially with Pete Carroll's departure as the franchise ventures into the Mike Macdonald era. In an ideal world, I would love it if the Hawks took inspiration from the throwback jerseys they brought back in 2023 and gave it a nice modernized look.
Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA)
Since the Thunder entered the NBA in 2008, they have had the same look for the majority of their existence.
No offence Thunder fans, it is not like OKC is some historic franchise like the Celtics or Lakers who have a look that will forever remain synonymous with its history, it is time to switch it up.
When Nike became the NBA's uniform partner before the 2017-18 season, they released a line of uniforms titled "City Edition" jerseys. OKC had one of my favourite alternate uniforms for that season, I would love it if they designed a uniform set with that look in mind.
Dallas Mavericks (NBA)
Much like the Thunder, the Mavericks have had a similar look for the majority of the 2000s. It is not as if the Mavs uniforms are bad by any means, I am just tired of the look. This uniform design will forever be linked to the Dirk Nowitzki era of Mavericks basketball. With the Luka Doncic era now in full swing, let's give this era of basketball in Texas its own identity.
New Orleans Pelicans (NBA)
Since changing the team name from Hornets to Pelicans in 2013, New Orleans has had boring jerseys in my opinion. Being in New Orleans, The Pelicans should have jerseys that represent the nightlife that the city provides, especially throughout the Mardi Gras season. The team has experimented with a more colourful look at times with alternate looks but I think it is time to incorporate the purple, green, and yellow look on a full-time basis.
Vancouver Canucks (NHL)
Sneakily, the Vancouver Canucks have had some of the best and most unique uniforms or logos in the NHL since they were established in 1970. From the flying V to, the skate, to the stick-in-rink, heck, they even donned a Johnny Canuck themed jersey in the 2022-23 season. All of those designs were and remain beautiful.
This is why it is borderline offensive that the team has continued to wear those orca-themed uniforms since 1997.
The blue, green, and white colour scheme is iconic, and that specific scheme has almost been occupied throughout sports with teams on the West Coast. Examples being the teams located in Seattle; the NFL's Seahawks, the MLB's Mariners, and the WHL's Thunderbirds.
I would love it if the Canucks brought back the Skate logo but incorporated it with the current colour scheme that dates back to when the franchise entered the NHL first place. Would that not be a great way to honour the past while looking forward to the future?
Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL)
I love the Columbus Blue Jackets jerseys, but as we enter into an era where uniforms are starting to become a bit more clean or simple once again, the Jackets should consider just sharpening the edges on their current look while also giving one of my favourite alternate jerseys of the 2000s a different colour-way.
Winnipeg Jets (NHL)
Winnipeg, I get what you were trying to do when the Jets re-entered the NHL in 2011. You wanted to give this new era of Jets hockey in Winnipeg its look, and as you can tell by previous teams I have mentioned, I like when franchises do this. That being said, when you have one of the best logos and uniform designs in your respective sports, maybe do not abandon it completely.
Do the right Mark Chipman.
Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL)
Can someone explain to me why in 2012, the Lightning decided they wanted to look exactly like the Toronto Maple Leafs in the uniform department? I have never liked this look for Tampa, it is just bland. I will forever think of a black-and-grey look when I think about the Bolts. It is time to embrace the franchise's roots by going back to that original colour scheme.
Tampa Bay Rays (MLB)
In an ideal world, the Tampa Bay Rays' new jerseys would say "Montreal Expos" on them, but it does not seem like that will be happening anytime soon.
The Rays have some of the best throwbacks in all of baseball with their Devil Rays jerseys and hats.
Why wear one of the most dull uniforms in all of baseball when you have one of the most stunning and eye-pleasing looks in all of sports right at your disposal?
